A 'name' domaine without doubt, perhaps one of the most famous domaines in Burgundy. Established 1919 in its current format, although the Gouge family have made wine for generations. The domaine is currently run by grandsons of Henri, Pierre and Christian Gouges.
Vineyards consist of 36Ha in total, including holdings in six Nuits St. Georges 1er Crus. A modern gravity flow winemaking facility is now used.
Tradition is key here, with Henri's philosophy of "It is on the vines that great wines are made" holding true into the current generation of winemakers. Respecting the land and the environment have been at the heart of their winemaking. Great care to nurture the soil and vines has lead to the highest quality fruit while controlling yields for optimum results.
Harvest is entirely destemmed and vinification takes place in lined cement vats. Once complete, wines are transferred into small oak barrels, with a proportion of roughly 25% new oak each vintage.
These are wines - by design - which are created for the long term. Wines of power and structure, and so and can be difficult in their youth. With volume of production low in each vintage, these are highly sought after bottles. A must-try for Burgundy lovers.
Les Pruliers vines located on the south slope of the village, in two parcels totalling 4.5Ha – they are assembled during vinification. Complex soils, including loose scree in the upper areas which reach up to 800m above sea level. The vines average 50 years in age. These are powerful wines with good ageing potential.
The nose is perhaps a little closed still, but showing notes of black cherry, plum, cassis, smoke, a hint of game meat. Ripe, supple, concentrated on the palette with firm tannins and spice. Powerful yet finessed. Good ageing potential.

Quick note on Fine Wine purchasing.
When ordering that special bottle of wine it is worth doing a little research before making a purchase. Wine is a living product, which goes through changes and stages of development in the bottle, as well as varying between vintages. If you are considering ordering an older vintage we recommend speaking to a member of staff or using a review site like cellartracker.com to try and get as full a picture as possible of the flavour profile and development of the bottle you are considering.
